At 13 Not Out we believe every girl deserves the chance to stay in school — even when she’s on her period. That’s why we’re excited to launch our new period-packs in the Beyond Boundaries shop: a simple, meaningful way to support girls in Uganda with essential menstrual hygiene products.
Why this matters
A recent audit found that 64% of Ugandan schoolgirls regularly miss school because they lack access to menstrual products and adequate WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) facilities. According to the Ministry of Education, around 23% of girls aged 12–18 drop out of school once they begin menstruation — a devastating loss of potential and opportunity. Studies have shown that on period-days girls are much more likely to miss school compared to non-period days (for example, absenteeism jumps from ~7% to ~28%). In many cases, girls lack any access to sanitary materials — leaving them to rely on makeshift, unhygienic alternatives. This not only threatens their education, but also their dignity, health and self-confidence.
These statistics reveal a harsh truth: period poverty is not just about inconvenience. It is a major barrier to education, equality and a brighter future for countless girls.
What our period-packs do
Each pack contains essential menstrual hygiene items — reusable pads and soap in a handy zip storage bag — that allow girls to manage their periods with dignity, hygiene, and confidence. Thanks to our trusted partner organisations in Uganda, the packs will be delivered directly to girls and young women who need them most.
By providing this support we hope to:
Reduce school absenteeism and help girls stay in class even during their periods. Prevent girls from falling behind or dropping out altogether. Protect girls’ dignity, health, and self-esteem. Shift the narrative around menstruation — from shame and silence to dignity, empowerment and normality.
How you can help — and why it’s perfect for Christmas
